A brighter Christmas for the needy in Singapore

Full of holiday spirit, 80 staff volunteers from BNP Paribas Singapore participated in a Christmas Community Outreach initiative called “Celebrating Christmas With You” in December 2012. This initiative was in support of the needy elderly and children living in public housing estates in the vicinity of Queenstown, Commonwealth and Redhill in Singapore.

Staff kicked-off the first day of the outreach by helping to pack bags of groceries and household items for nearly 80 elderly residents. The volunteers went from floor to floor, handing out the bags to the residents. Most of these needy elderly residents live alone, are in poor health and without next-of-kin.

The following day, a Sunday when most people are typically at home with their families or sleeping in, our Singapore staff volunteers got up bright and early to help host a Christmas lunch party for over 400 needy children and their families at the Leng Kee Community Centre. These children mainly come from low-income families that struggle to make ends meet.

Our volunteers tirelessly packed goody bags, decorated the main hall, ushered the children and their families during registration, and helped man the buffet lines. To the surprise and delight of the children, two volunteers showed up dressed as Santa Claus and “Santarina” to give out goody bags and both were received with endless hugs and big smiles. The children were also entertained by performances of the Leng Kee Dance troupe and later joined them on stage to dance to the popular song, “Gangnam Style”.

The day left smiles on the faces of volunteers — including top management from the bank — to rival the grins on the children’s faces as they headed home with goody bags and special holiday memories.
